The West Sussex airport, Gatwick, is expected to handle 1.5 million passengers in that same time period. Adding to the holiday mayhem, baggage handlers at the Essex airport, Stanstead, plan a strike for Friday, Saturday and Monday of this Easter weekend.

Despite the assurances of the Association of Train Operating Companies and the Network Rail that most passengers will not be hampered and that their use of buses is 34 percent lower than it was at this time last year, travel by rail will be complicated by engineering work on several lines. Almost all train companies are substituting buses for trains on at least some routes.

London’s Waterloo, King’s Cross, Liverpool Street and Euston stations will be undergoing engineering work, and services on South West Trains will be somewhat disturbed by the work. Operation of rails and platforms in the East Croydon area of south London will be reduced, causing service to Gatwick Airport to run only on the half-hour.

As always, fuel is a concern for those traveling by road. Though roadworks will be suspended over the holiday on some roads and motorways, motorists will face restrictions on some of the busiest routes. For safety reasons, roadworks will continue on a 22-mile stretch of the M1, near Luton in Bedfordsire. Eleven miles of the M25 around St. Albans in Hertfordshire, 23 miles of the M4 in the area of West London and 23 miles of the M62 by Leeds will be affected. Under these conditions, experienced Heathrow taxi drivers will be especially helpful.

Mike Penning, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, advises travelers to “check weather and travel conditions” before heading out on holiday trips. Maundy Thursday evening and Easter Monday afternoon are expected by the Highways Agency to be the busiest travel times this Easter weekend. Main routes will be especially full due to day trips and short getaways.

Irish Ferries estimates a 50 percent increase in passengers on ferries from Holyhead to Dublin and Pembroke, Wales to Rosslare, Ireland over the last Easter holiday. Brittany Ferries, Stena Line and DFDS Seaways also anticipate higher traffic.

Where is everyone going? The top two destinations for travelers through Gatwick at this time are Dublin and Malaga, with Milan taking up spot number three. Other popular overseas trips include New York, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and Rome.

Expedia, the popular travel site, has reported a 50 percent increase in domestic-trip scheduling over last year. London, Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham are the most popular domestic destinations. Unsurprisingly, the Passenger Shipping Association relates there is a rush to hire cars for the Easter holiday.
